Portrait Session Style Guide

Krouse 2019-3.jpg

I am so excited about your upcoming session!  Some of the most common questions I get after booking a session is "What do I wear!?"  This can be one of the more daunting parts of family photos.  I am going to share a few tips with you that I use when dressing my own family.  You want to have a great time, get fantastic photos and look your best all while displaying your unique family personality.

I typically start with one outfit that I may absolutely love!  Could be mine (not likely, lol) or one of my kids.  Once I have that, I can work from that piece.  I like to have a mix of prints (no more than two or three) and solids, pulling coordinating and or complimentary colors into each outfit!  So an example might be that I have a floral dress with pinks and blues and then I put a few of my children in sold blue shirts, one of my daughters in a white dress with a blue bow and maybe someone in pink stripes!  You want to make sure you dress for the season and the area that we have chosen.  For example, you would want your color palette to reflect fall and use earthly colors if you are doing a fall session or brighter colors if you are taking advantage of the fresh spring landscape!

Things to stay away from would be easily wrinkled fabrics (wrinkles will show up in portraits).  Restrictive clothing that might be uncomfortable as that will translate into images.  Too many patterns, as I said before I usually stick to the two pattern rule and then arrange those people in the image while shooting, where they will compliment each other the most.

If you are a senior, props that show your personality, or are significant to your educational journey, can add another layer to your image.  Jackets, school rings, cap and gowns, awards, art, band instruments etc. can help to tell your story and make for an amazing keepsake for many years to come.

The most important aspect of any session is to have fun!  I am not above making a fool of myself in order to get the shots that I want and that you will love!  Being comfortable and relaxed will help me to create portraits you and your family will cherish.
